How to Keep Tile Grout Clean and Sealed
Grout is the weak link in any tile installation. It stains, cracks, and collects mold faster than the tile itself. Keeping it clean and sealed extends the life of your entire floor or wall.
Regular Cleaning
A stiff brush and a baking soda paste handles most grout stains. For tougher buildup, oxygen bleach solutions work without damaging the grout. Avoid harsh acid cleaners — they eat away at grout over time.
Seal It Annually
Unsealed grout absorbs water, stains, and mold spores. A quality penetrating sealer applied once a year keeps grout protected. The application is straightforward, but knowing which sealer to use for your grout type matters.
When to Regrout
If grout is crumbling, cracking, or permanently stained despite cleaning, it's time to remove and replace it. Regrouting is labor-intensive — the old grout has to be carefully removed without damaging the tile edges.
