Why Prep Work Makes or Breaks an Interior Paint Job

Most people focus on color choice, but the real difference between a paint job that lasts and one that peels is what happens before the first coat goes on.

Clean the Walls First

Dust, grease, and grime prevent paint from bonding. Kitchen and bathroom walls especially need a good wash with TSP or a degreaser before priming. Skipping this step is the number one reason paint peels within a year.

Fill and Sand Every Imperfection

Nail holes, dents, and cracks show through paint — especially with flat or matte finishes. Spackle, sand smooth, and wipe clean. It takes time, but it's what separates amateur work from professional results.

Prime When Needed

New drywall, stains, dark-to-light color changes, and repaired areas all need primer. Primer creates a uniform surface for the topcoat and improves adhesion. Self-priming paints help but don't replace dedicated primer in every situation.

Tape and Protect

Quality painter's tape and drop cloths protect trim, floors, and fixtures. Cheap tape bleeds. Good tape pulls clean. The small investment in proper masking saves hours of touch-up work.
