3 Hardwood Floor Maintenance Mistakes That Cause Damage
Hardwood floors add beauty and value to any home, but everyday habits can shorten their lifespan. Here are three mistakes that cause the most damage.
1. Using Too Much Water
Wet mopping hardwood is one of the fastest ways to damage it. Water seeps between boards, warps the wood, and breaks down the finish. Use a damp (not wet) microfiber mop and a cleaner made specifically for hardwood.
2. Skipping Felt Pads on Furniture
Chairs, tables, and couches scratch hardwood every time they move. Felt pads on all furniture legs are cheap insurance. Replace them regularly — worn pads collect grit that scratches worse than bare legs.
3. Ignoring Humidity Changes
Wood expands and contracts with humidity. In Illinois, winter heating dries the air and causes gaps between boards. Summer humidity can cause cupping. A humidifier in winter and dehumidifier in summer keeps floors stable.
When Refinishing Is Needed
If the finish is worn through to bare wood, scratches are deep, or boards are cupping, it's time for professional refinishing. This involves multiple sanding passes and proper finish coats — not a DIY-friendly job if you want it done right.
